Automation & Technology are the Way of the Future

2013 was a memorable year for the UAE. Dubai's non-oil foreign trade hit a new high crossing the AED 1.2 trillion record of 2012. Such strong results reflect the effectiveness of the emirate’s economic policies and performance, as well as the strength of Dubai’s world class infrastructure.

The successful bid for the World Expo 2020 is a monumental milestone for the UAE and Dubai’s success story, it brings to reality the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, of bringing the premier International event to the our region for the very first time.

DP World was the premier partner for the EXPO bid and is now working closely with our partners to ensure that we meet the cargo growth that Expo will add to the UAE. Jebel Ali and our UAE Region terminals delivered 13.6 million TEU containers in 2013. And with the on-going expansion projects on target for completion at our flagship port, we are well positioned to cater for any increase in volumes because of the Expo. Our strategy is to be ready for demand ahead of time. It’s part of our commitment to deliver excellence to our nation, the trading community and our customers.

We were honoured by the recent visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s to DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali Port.Accompanied by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, His Highness inaugurated the new Container Terminal, which will be the world’s largest semi-automated facility when fully operational this year.

This year the total capacity of Jebel Ali Port will reach 19 million TEU, with the ability to handle 10 of the largest vessels simultaneously. We are especially pleased to announce that the new state-of-the-art remote controlled quay cranes, will be operated by Emirati nationals, including women.

With technology and automation we will have special consoles and equipment in the operations room designed for wheelchair access, to provide opportunities for those with special needs to be crane operators. DP World continues to lead the industry by pioneering large scale automation. This is also in line with our leadership’s vision of transforming Dubai into the frontline city of this century with smart systems using technology.

Automation and new technology are the way of the future and will help the supply chain realise the efficiencies on land that the new mega-ships generate at sea.Our strategy is to be in line with the vision of our nation’s leaders.

It is in the regard that I wish to commend the pioneering work that Dubai Trade has been doing over the past many years by seamlessly integrating Dubai’s vast trading community with its trade enablers like DP World, Jafza, Dubai Customs and other Dubai departments.

We are proud that the UAE continues to be a world leader in facilitating trade when compared with the leading world economies. It has retained its number one position in the MENA region and top four in the world in Trading Across Borders, according to the latest World Bank’s Doing Business Report 2014.

The Dubai Government is determined to sustain its heavy investment in the logistics infrastructure and stay ahead of competition for years to come, therefore bringing more business to the local trading community.
One of our key objectives is to maintain our global positions according to our leaderships’ vision to make Dubai and the UAE Number One in everything we do.

We compliment all government departments and all companies for their efficient and effective initiatives to streamline trade practices and business flows.

Together, we will continue to contribute to ensure the UAE’s leading position in some of the most strategic global indices.

Thank you for being an inspiration as well as a source of our success, and thanks to all our partners for making it possible.

And a special thanks to Dubai Trade team for their tireless efforts to make your life easier and faster.
Finally, I would like to conclude my speech by recalling His Highness Sheikh Mohammed’s belief that “In the race of Excellence there is no finish line”.
